Today we travelled from Oamaru to Mt Cook, encompassing some unusual but spectacular sights, including rocks that look like elephants(!), extremely rare Maori cave paintings dating back several hundred years (and now safely protected behind metal fencing), and the towering Omarama clay cliffs with their funnels and soaring turrets. The drive up the Hakataramea Valley with views across the Waitaki River and the Benmore and Aviemore lakes/dams was also very beautiful, and finally, we reached New Zealand’s highest mountain. More on that next time.
