As most of you will no doubt know, and indeed, maybe even one of the reasons that you may want to come to New Zealand, is that the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movie trilogies were all filmed here. We know there’s some big fans out there!
Alexander Farm, in between Rotorua and Hamilton, attracts around 650,000 visitors per year, all of whom are eager to share the ‘Hobbiton’ experience. The amazing set is spread over 14 acres of the land, with 44 Hobbit Holes, the great Party Tree, Bagshot Row and the Hobbiton Mill, Green Dragon pub and the double arched bridge. We had to go and check what all the fuss is about.
Now even though we’re not huge fans ourselves (we have seen 2 of the LOTR films), we loved our day here. The magic of being immersed inside ‘The Shire’ made it feel like we were in a movie itself. The beautiful landscaped village that has been created comes with its own stories, as well as numerous associations to the films. Colourful, cute and interesting, it made for some wonderful photo opportunities.
